Department of Public Works Truck - Swissvale

Annual CleanUp Day

Swissvale will hold its 18th annual Clean-Up Day on May 18th. Activities will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Department of Public Works Garage at 7560 Roslyn Street. Volunteers are needed to collect trash and debris from streets, sidewalks, parking lots and alleys in and around the business district. Rakes, shovels, gloves and trash bags will be provided to all volunteers along with a Swissvale Clean-Up T-Shirt.

A simultaneous collection of household waste and hard-to-recycle items such as electronics (TVs, VCRs, DVD players, computers, monitors, peripherals, etc.), household hazardous waste (paint, cleaning agents, oils, antifreeze and other household chemicals), tires, batteries and propane tanks will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Les Getz Memorial Park on Church Street. This collection is for Swissvale Borough residents only. Residents must bring proof of residency when they drop off their trash and recyclables. Multiple dumpsters will be available for the dumping of bulky waste, non-freon containing appliances, house clean-outs and other items.

This is an excellent opportunity to rid your house of unwanted and hard-to-dispose-of items and there is no cost to participate. Lunch will be provided to volunteers after the event and all registered volunteers will be eligible to win prizes!

Please contact the Swissvale Borough Department of Public Works at 412-271-0350 with any questions.

Leaf Collection

The Borough of Swissvale’s leaf collection operates from the first week in November for approximately five (5) weeks or until significant snowfall requires converting trucks for plowing and salting operations. Leaf collection follows the posted street sweeping schedule.

This service is for the collection of leaves only. Swissvale uses a high powered leaf vacuum and mulching machine which simultaneously collects and mulches the leaf waste before it enters the collection container on the truck. The fine blades in the mulching mechanism can be damaged by other yard waste, grass clippings, twigs and dirt. Leaf piles which contain a large amount of material other than leaves will not be collected.

Leaves must be raked to the edge of the street by 7:00 a.m. on collection day. Due to the heavy volume of leaves each fall, the collection vehicle can only make one pass on each side of the street and cannot return for leaves that were not at the curb prior to collection.

Winter Road Maintenance

DPW employees are on call 24 hours per day/seven days a week during the winter season to keep the roads passable for motorists. When snow and ice conditions are predicted, DPW employees work alternative schedules to ensure a quick response time to the winter storms.

During snow and ice storms, the Department of Public Works would like to offer the following suggestions to expedite road maintenance and minimize damage to parked vehicles:

  • Utilize driveways, garages or other off-street parking when snow and ice are predicted.
  • Park as close to the curb as possible.
  • Fold in the mirror on the street side of your vehicle.
  • Do not throw or blow snow from sidewalks or driveway onto the road.

Following these suggestions will assist the Department of Public Works in keeping the roads clear of snow and ice throughout the winter season.
